here we go guys: EVERYONE ASKED FOR IT
here’s me doing a quick tutorial on how 2 chub!
disclaimer:I M NOT A PROFESSIONAL AND IM KINDA RLY SHITTY AT ART AND NOW THAT THAT’S OUT OF THE WAY:
I’m fat, so I use myself as a reference often. this tutorial is inevitably Not Safe For Work, since bigger people are unnecessarily sexualized often or made into a laughingstock. If you are sensitive about these issues, be careful with the following tutorial.
FUCKIN USE REFERENCE
What IS reference and why do you need it? I’ll direct you to a wonderful tutorial called the shrimp method. It shows you how important reference is, how you’re supposed to use it correctly.
Summing it up briefly: for you to learn how to draw a thing, you need to look at a thing. there is no shame in looking at something with the intent to learn about it, because drawing implies that you’re learning things as you go. You’re training your eye to recognize what shapes are hard and what shapes are not, what sags and what doesn’t. Reference is incredibly important and it should never be skipped in early drawing stages. It helps you learn and become super good at drawing. Learn bodies through using a bucketload of reference.
You can find reference on fat people bodies through the internet, of course, but make sure that you catch the full body before you just draw half a body, or just the belly or butt! Learn how to catch the full shape before getting to the details. Anatomy and proportion are crucial in drawing, and even if some people get big enough so their skeletons are buried in fat, they are still people and are still human and limited to human proportions *U* knowing this will help you stylize better too.
Unfortunately, big people are often sexualized and fetishized, so you have to learn to look at things objectively and from an artistic standpoint, which can be a little hard. I always advise looking at pornographic imagery to learn how to draw character interaction, but not everyone can handle things like that because of their abusive nature. Try to find blogs that are either artistic imagebanks or blogs of people that are voluntarily showing their body, instead of porn deposits.
STEP 2: PRACTICE
use and abuse that reference!! USE IT!! this is the most important step. learn how fat folds and piles up and most of all, learn how /bodytypes are very very vast/, and that they’re like huge customizable bits of life.
Some people can have a big belly and a tiny butt, some people will have long legs and big breasts and a chubby face but have a small, barely soft tummy. Once you look around you, you’ll see that no two people are the same and that’s pretty fuckin great.
Now go and draw the heck out of those people. *u*
that’s the tutorial though. I really cannot be more helpful than this.
i can give you some tips, though, so here we go.
what makes a dude look big?
for this we will use two pictures that i drew. and also karkat.
After a few years of practice i started realizing what makes a person look large - fat on the stomach, extra padding on the thighs, a round face, the fact that natural folds form here and there, like on the back and hips and sometimes, on the belly!
kankri here shows well what I mean, since he’s a pear shaped boy, all flab, unlike the way I draw karkat. muscle stays, defined or not, fat sags cutely in happy curves. ;v;
3 years ago i thought that karkat i drew was obese. Supe large. I didn’t look at reference because I was afraid of failing and afraid of doing things wrong. and then i started drawing big people because i wanted to, and — it’s been a fulfilling experience ever since.
thanks for reading! I might stream sometime, and if you guys want to see how I draw big people, you can just hop on here.
I’d give you reference sites, but unfortunately, most of them include porn, so I’m not comfortable sharing them. sorry!
